Taxonomy:   Macro  >>.  >>  Geometridae  >> Larentiinae

Confusion Species: November Moth
ID pointers: See Detailed document by Christian Heintzen here – Identifying Epiritas by octavals and wing patterning – See Detailed document by Christian Heintzen here – Identifying Epiritas by octavals and wing patterning The four species of Epirrita moth are difficult to ID in the field. Best to follow the information contained in the ID Guides. In some cases the moths genitalia needs to be inspected. However in fresh clearly marked (diluta) individuals, the post-median line touches or bends towards the small black discal spot if present. In the Pale November Moth (christyi) the black discal spot is isolated. The Pale November Moth is the most difficult one to ID on markings alone but the post-median fascia is much rounder and shallower around the discal spot. In Autumnal Moth it is sharply angled.
Distribution:  (First record: 23 September 2006 )  –  Pale November Moth appears not to have been positively identified in Derbyshire – One that was recorded on 23/9/2006 was too early for Pale November Moth. It has been flagged by Christian Heintzen and re-identified by Roy Leverton as an Autumnal Moth. Crucially the photo for the Darley Dale Moth seems to show a female (strongly ‘shouldered’ appearance) in which case gen det wouldn’t clinch an ID. It also shows a very sharply angled post-median fascia.

Bedrock Geology ** indirectly affects moth distribution by influencing the type of habitat and food plants available in an area. In turn, this may affect the types of moths that can thrive, or where they can most likely be found.
