Taxonomy:   Micro   >>  Tortricidae  >> Olethreutinae
** Thanks to Christian Heintzen for the species write up **
Other Name/s: Dark Roller
ID Difficulty:  amber  – care required in the identification process, as confusion with similar species is likely – quality photographs required.
ID pointers: In general shape this is a typical Ancylis with its extended lobe at the forewing apex. Comes across as a mostly dark brown species, however with a noticeable orangey apex, a characteristic that it shares with the Australian Orange-tip (Tachystola acroxantha). The orange shoulder scales are diagnostic as are the black and white striations that pattern the orange-tipped apex of the forewing. The latter presumably gave rise to the species name ‘upupana’ referring to the Hoopoe, whose crest shows a vaguely similar pattern of colours.
Distribution:  (First record: 25 May 2025 at Glossop )  –  (Last record: 25 May 2025 at Glossop )  –  Nationally Scarce B – A first record for the VC57 & Derbyshire was recorded from Glossop on 25th May 2025. This species looks like it is expanding northwards. It has been found in Yorkshire, so either overlooked here or moving faster along the east coast and then from there more inland.

Bedrock Geology ** indirectly affects moth distribution by influencing the type of habitat and food plants available in an area. In turn, this may affect the types of moths that can thrive, or where they can most likely be found.

Land-cover * shows the variety of land-cover within the VC57 area, based on the CORINE (Coordination of Information on the Environment) forty-four thematic classes of land-cover. This will show, to a greater or lesser degree, the number and variety of moths found in different land-cover types. The UK continues to operate within the Copernicus programme, with the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) providing Corine Land Cover (CLC) datasets for the UK and its territories.
