** Identification write-up required **
Other Name/s: White-barred Alder Pigmy
ID Difficulty:  Red – difficult to identify – detailed examination required, often a Gen Det and/or specimen and quality photographs are required.
Confusion Species: Stigmella betulicola / S.microtheriella / S. alnetella
ID pointers: The adult has bronzy-brown forewings with a narrow, pale yellowish-white band or fascia. The wingspan is typically between 4.4 and 5.2 mm. Adults are difficult to distinguish from other Stigmella species without detailed gen-det.
Distribution:  (Last record: 2 records prior to 2010 – no further recent records )  –  Uncertain only 2 records prior to 2010 (DaNES historic)  and no recent records since
General Comment: None
Flight Period: May /  August –  2 generations May & August Mine Period:  July /  August /  September /  October
Mine Period Additional: The larvae can be found in mines on alder leaves during July and again from September to October. Larvae over winters as a pupa.
Mine ID Difficulty:  Red Mine Leaf – Mine cannot be identified without breeding through and then adult may need to be examined by Gen Det Prep.
Mine Type/s:  Gallery
Mine Feeding Method/s: Not Recorded
Mine Comment: The larvae are leaf-miners on various species of alder, primarily the Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa). They feed within the leaf tissue, creating a long, irregular, slender gallery or mine. The mines of S. glutinosae are very similar to those of Stigmella alnetella and cannot be reliably separated once the larva has vacated. Positive identification requires examining the live larva or rearing it to an adult for dissection.

Bedrock Geology ** indirectly affects moth distribution by influencing the type of habitat and food plants available in an area. In turn, this may affect the types of moths that can thrive, or where they can most likely be found.
