Blue –  Generally Common / Widespread        purple – Leaf Miner
Taxonomy:   Micro   >>  Yponomeutidae  >> Yponomeutinae
ID Difficulty:  Red – difficult to identify – detailed examination required, often a Gen Det and/or specimen and quality photographs are required.
Confusion Species: Y.malinellus & Y.rorrella
ID pointers: Very similar to other Yponomeutidae. Cannot reliably be identified without DNA Analysis or rearing the larvae from the food plant. Some sources say the moth can be identified by the pure white cilia as opposed to grey, but this is very unreliable. If in doubt record as Yponomeutidae aggregate (agg). Cannot be identified by dissection. Only reliable method of ID is by larval webs on food plant and by breeding from larva off food plant.
Distribution:  Widespread in Derbyshire and reasonably common wherever the food-plant exists. Can be identified by the masses of larval webs.
General Comment: None
Flight Period: July /  August –  One generation July-August Mine Period:  May /  June
Mine Period Additional: Identified from food plant (Spindle)
Mine ID Difficulty:  Green Mine Leaf – Easy to identify, generally the leaf mine is distinctive and unlikely to be confused with other species.
Mine Type/s:  Blotch
Mine Feeding Method/s: Not Recorded
Mine Comment: The larvae of Yponomeuta cagnagella (Spindle Ermine) are considered leaf miners initially, before becoming gregarious external feeders. The larvae start by creating small, full-depth blotch mines within the leaves, usually while overwintering. After this initial stage, the larvae emerge to feed gregariously on the leaves within a protective, communal silken web. They can occasionally defoliate entire spindle bushes or hedgerows.

Bedrock Geology ** indirectly affects moth distribution by influencing the type of habitat and food plants available in an area. In turn, this may affect the types of moths that can thrive, or where they can most likely be found.
