Taxonomy:   Micro   >>  Yponomeutidae  >> Yponomeutinae
ID Difficulty:  Red – difficult to identify – detailed examination required, often a Gen Det and/or specimen and quality photographs are required.
Confusion Species: Orchard Ermine (Yponomeuta padella), Spindle Ermine (Yponomeuta cagnagella) and Willow Ermine (Yponomeuta rorrella)
ID pointers: Difficult to ID, so best guide is the food plant. White head and palps, pure white forewing, with a slight greyness to the central area and scattered with black dots. Cannot be identified by dissection and only reliably IDentified by food plant larval webs or by breeding through from larva from larval webs. Please record undetermined specimens of Yponomeuta padella, Yponomeuta malinellus and Yponomeuta cagnagella as the aggregate.
Distribution:  Widespread and local, especially where there are orchards.
General Comment: None

Mine Period Additional: None.
Mine ID Difficulty:  Green Mine Leaf – Easy to identify, generally the leaf mine is distinctive and unlikely to be confused with other species.
Mine Type/s:  Blotch
Mine Feeding Method/s: Not Recorded
Mine Comment: The larvae of Yponomeuta malinellus (apple ermine) are leaf miners during their early developmental stage. After emerging from overwintering egg masses on the bark, the young larvae tunnel into the leaves and “mine” them. They create small, full-depth mines that eventually merge into a larger brown blotch. Once the larvae are larger, they leave the mines and begin to feed gregariously within communal silken webs, tying leaves together. It is in these webs that they consume the rest of the foliage before pupating. The larvae pupate in clusters within the webbing.

Bedrock Geology ** indirectly affects moth distribution by influencing the type of habitat and food plants available in an area. In turn, this may affect the types of moths that can thrive, or where they can most likely be found.
