Confusion Species: Phyllonorycter coryli (Nut Leaf Blister Moth)
ID pointers: A small moth, the forewing markings appear white on an orange background, with black edging around the strigulae (small streaks). The thorax has a white median line.
Distribution:  (Last record: 11 October 2025 at Darley Park, Derby )  –  Only records received are of Leaf Mines so status is uncertain in the recording area. All Leaf mines from one site in the south of the county. Would suspect the species to be rare and localised due to the scarcity and localisation of Hornbeams in the county. Leaf Mine discovered Sunnyhill Park Derby 23/9/2025; Darley Park 10/10/2025.
General Comment: None
Flight Period: May /  August –  Two generations May and a second brood in August Mine Period:  July /  September /  October
Mine Period Additional: None.
Mine ID Difficulty:  Red Mine Leaf – Mine cannot be identified without breeding through and then adult may need to be examined by Gen Det Prep.
Mine Type/s: Not Recorded
Mine Feeding Method/s: Not Recorded
Mine Comment: The larvae feed exclusively on the leaves of the hornbeam (and hop hornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia). The mine is like thin paper in appearance and they create a roundish, silvery blotch mine on the upper side of the leaf, centred over a side vein. As the mine matures, it contracts significantly, causing the leaf to fold strongly upwards. The pupa overwinters inside the cocoon within the mine.

Bedrock Geology ** indirectly affects moth distribution by influencing the type of habitat and food plants available in an area. In turn, this may affect the types of moths that can thrive, or where they can most likely be found.
