Garden Carpet – Xanthorhoe fluctuata ab. costovata  – I discovered a rather strange looking Carpet moth in the moth trap this morning and I really wondered what it was. Eventually the only species I could pin it to was a rather odd looking Garden Carpet. Posting a photo to our recording team for comments, Christian Heintzen did some research and discovered it is “aberration” Xanthorhoe fluctuata ab. costovata, originally described by Haworth in 1809 in his Lepidoptera Britannica: Part II, p. 334. Many thanks to Christian for the research on this moth. – Tony Davison.
