A Special Hawk-moth arrives in Derby

News broke today of a rather special species of Hawk-moth that has arrived in large numbers across Britain during the recent hot weather that has moved up from North Africa. I was wondering when Derbyshire would get one.

William Grange was the fortunate moth recorder, he recorded a Striped Hawk-moth that had been attracted to his Allestree garden light trap overnight on 28th May 2026. It was rather a surprise for William in more ways than one, as back in 2022 he caught his first Striped Hawk-moth, and at the time it was the first record for Derbyshire since 1947. Now he has two records that are both the first ones since 1947!! I wonder if anymore will turn up in the county, there is a chance..
