ID Difficulty:  amber  – care required in the identification process, as confusion with similar species is likely – quality photographs required.
ID pointers: A rare day flying moth known for its striking resemblance to a wasp. Has mostly a black body accented by two narrow yellow bands on the abdomen. It features completely translucent wings with dark borders and the female shows a prominent, vibrant orange tail fan, whereas in the male this is brown
Distribution:  (First record: 26 June 2026 at Old Glossop )  –  (Last record: 26 June 2026 at Old Glossop )  –  A first record of this Clearwing for VC57 Derbyshire. One came to a bottle of ketchup on a patio table on 26th June 2026 at Old Glossop and stayed fro around 15-20 minutes allowing the observer to get some decent images of this species. A likely wanderer no doubt.

Food Plant: Adults are attracted to pheromone lure as in most clearwing species. The larvae bore into mature birch.
