Taxonomy:   Macro  >>.  >>  Sesiidae  >> Sesiinae

ID pointers:

The most distinctive feature is the bright orange tail fan, which both sexes can show with variable amounts of black. The literature states that the tail fan is usually brighter in females and darker brown in males. Some individuals have been recorded with all black tail fans with slight orange margins. Both sexes show two narrow yellow bands across the abdomen.

Distribution:  A very localised species in Britain, generally only found in certain parts of Wales, Scotland and Ireland and in localised spots in Staffordshire, Cumbria and Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire. A first record for VC57 Derbyshire when one appeared in a garden at Glossop 26th June 2026. The recorder was having a family meal in his garden, when the clearwing turned up and was discovered on a ketchup bottle on the patio. The moth hung around for 15-20 minutes before it disappeared. The moth was photographed and the record has been verified and accepted on iRecord. The attraction to a ketchup bottle is most unusual.

Temporal Distribution Chart
Adults: (between 2026 - 2026)
(click legend below to show/hide datasets)
This chart summarises all available historical occurrence records collated by ISO week of the year. It reflects recorder effort and sampling distribution as well as true biological activity, and should be interpreted as an indicative pattern of seasonal occurrence rather than a statistically controlled abundance or phenology model.

Changes in First and Last Recorded Activity Dates Over Time
Activity Data Range: 2026 – 2026
Earliest Appearance: 26th June (in 2026)
Latest Appearance: 26th June (in 2026)
This chart presents a time-series summary of recorded observations. It is based on available records at the time of analysis and will evolve as further data are added. The rolling mean provides a smoothed representation of variation in recorded activity over time. Annual record totals are shown for context; years with fewer records may provide a less complete representation of activity than years with higher recording intensity. Interpretation should consider that apparent trends may reflect both biological change and variation in recording effort.

Bedrock Geology ** indirectly affects moth distribution by influencing the type of habitat and food plants available in an area. In turn, this may affect the types of moths that can thrive, or where they can most likely be found.
