ID Difficulty:  amber  – care required in the identification process, as confusion with similar species is likely – quality photographs required.
Confusion Species:  Phtheochroa sodaliana (Pied Buckthorn Beauty)
ID pointers: Forewings are white, dappled grey or a pale ochre, heavily mottled with grey and black spots. The crest on top of the thorax is mixed orange or reddish brown and blackish. There is a dark grey cross-band at about one half.
Distribution:  (Last record: 20 May 2026 at Gang Mine, Cromford )  –  Should be local in Bluebell Woods but very few records to support this. The last record was from 5/6/1971 Via Gellia. One netted at Archery Wood, Wyver Lane, Belper 29/4/2026. 1 Gang Mine, Cromford 18/5/2026 and another on 20/5/2026
