Taxonomy:   Micro   >>  Nepticulidae  >> Nepticulinae
Other Name/s: Black-spot Sallow Pigmy
ID Difficulty:  Red – difficult to identify – detailed examination required, often a Gen Det and/or specimen and quality photographs are required.
Confusion Species: Stigmella salicis, Stigmella obliquella
ID pointers: Adults are mostly blackish with a slight purple sheen and an obvious white or creamy blotch. The head is orange or yellowish.
Distribution:  (Last record: 24 November 2025 at Glossop )  –  Uncertain due to insufficient data – one record from 1975 – The leaf mine was discovered from Sett Valley 13/11/2025 and at least 12 mines found at Markham Vale amongst Sallow leaf litter – both are significant finds but suspect the mines are common and simply been over-looked..
General Comment: Notes by Christian Heintzen re image Ectoedemis intimella – 19th Nov 2025 – Thornsett, Sett Valley – on Goat Willow (Salix caprea) in green sector of fallen leaf (A) > early mine in midrib/petiole then full depth blotch against midrib (B) > mine in green island (a) with two diverging frass lines (b) > tenanted mine (c) with greenish larva with brown head
Flight Period: June –  A single generation Mine Period:  September /  October /  November
Mine Period Additional: The larvae mine the leaves of sallow, initially mining the leaf petiole and midrib of the leaf. Subsequently it mines into the leaf-blade, creating a green island and tends to form a fairly distinctive blotch mine containing two diverging lines of frass. The moth overwinters as a pupa in a pale ochreous to light reddish-brown cocoon found on the ground or in amongst leaf litter
Mine ID Difficulty:  Amber Mine Leaf – Care required in ID process as confusion with similar leaf mines. Quality photos of the mine required.
Mine Type/s:  Blotch
Mine Feeding Method/s:  Stem
Mine Comment: The larvae mine the leaves of various Salix species, including goat willow (Salix caprea), grey willow (Salix cinerea), and crack willow (Salix fragilis). The larvae feed from July to November. The larva can often be found in so called green islands amongst fallen Sallow leaves.  Eggs are laid on the upper side of a sallow (willow) leaf, typically near the midrib.

Bedrock Geology ** indirectly affects moth distribution by influencing the type of habitat and food plants available in an area. In turn, this may affect the types of moths that can thrive, or where they can most likely be found.
