Other Name/s: Pied Smudge / Bunny moth
ID Difficulty:  green  – easy to identify, generally distinctive and unlikely to be confused with other species.
ID pointers: A distinctive species with upturned wingtips, which are characteristic of this group and black & white appearance. An unmistakeable “Bunny” pattern on the dorsum, best viewed from above, which gives this moth the nickname of Bunny Moth. There is an unusual colour morph which is very interesting and striking. Almost black in some cases often a dark dusky grey. It is possible that colder temperatures during development may have an influence over these colour morphs, to produce darker colours?. These specimens can pose identification issues, but it is still possible to make out the diagnostic “Bunny” pattern of this species, even in extreme dark coloured varieties.
Distribution:  Widespread throughout the county where there is Sycamore.
