ID Difficulty:  amber  – care required in the identification process, as confusion with similar species is likely – quality photographs required.
Confusion Species:  Clouded Border
ID pointers: A distinctive and intricately marked black and white moth. Relatively unmistakable, but can be mistaken for Clouded Border.
Distribution:  (First record: 1863 at Overseal Wood, Swadlincote )  –  (Last record: 2024 )  –  A resident with a very restricted distribution in Derbyshire, being known only from a handful of locations. The first account was in 1863 from Overseal, Swadlincote. In recent years thought to be extinct in the county, however one was recorded from Bretby Park in 2004 and then one was photographed at Crich Chase on 3 June 2006 by Graham Finch. Only a further four accounts to 2011. The next sighting was one in a private garden at Baggerswell Wood, Alderwasley on 2nd June 2022. Another specimen recorded in the same garden at Baggerswell Wood on 17th May 2024. Possibly only one site left in Derbyshire.
