Confusion Species: Lunar Marbled Brown

ID pointers: The moth features highly variable forewings displaying a blend of pale grey, dark brown and whitish cross-lines. Some individuals exhibit a distinct dark melanic form where pale areas are replaced by dark brown. It can be confused with Lunar Marbled Brown, which flies earlier in the spring (typically April – May) and possesses a highly distinct central black crescent mark on its forewing which is lacking in Marbled Brown.

Distribution: The second record of the species for VC57 Derbyshire when a worn adult was attracted to light at a garden moth trap in Belper on 8th July 2026. An old Danes record exists from 2006. The species occurs widely over much of Britain especially in the southern half of England.

Moth Activity: Nocturnal – and is attracted to light
