Taxonomy:   Micro  >>  Nepticulidae Other Name/s: Sorrel Pigmy, Johanssonia acetosae ID Difficulty:  amber  - care required in the identification process, as confusion with similar species is likely - quality photographs required.
ID pointers: Found on Sorrel. The gallery is narrow starting in a tight spiral. Turns bright red around the mine. The adult shown here emerged on 19/4/2022. The mine was recorded on 31/8/2021 at Pin Dale, Castleton.
Distribution:  National Status – The smallest British moth and the adult is rarely seen. Very local throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Not known from Northern Scotland – Derbyshire status unknown. Only records have come from Castleton.
Flight Period: April /  May /  June /  July /  -  May – October Mine Period: May /  June /  July /  August /  September /  October /   - The mine is very distinctive and form a spiral around the so called “Egg Shell” turning a bright red around the inner ring.
