The Sallow – Noctuidae – Xyleninae – Cirrhia icteritia – colour code •
STATUS – A resident that is widely distributed and generally fairly common in Derbyshire. Found in all areas of the county where there is sallow growing, so main population is found in the southern Trent Valley region and the coal measures. A similar distribution to Pink-barred Sallow, but more numerous.
ID POINTERS – Ground colour is a bright sulphur yellow, marbled with orange-brown markings and these form two rather obscure partial cross-bands. The more outer of the two harbouring the kidney mark which has a black spot in the trailing half. The wing is slightly hooked in appearance. A fairly easy moth to ID. There is a pale yellow form (ab flavescens), that has very little in the way of markings other than the obvious “Kidney Spot”, that is occasionally seen.
