ID Difficulty: - easy to identify, generally distinctive and unlikely to be confused with other species.
ID pointers: Variable in both size and ground colour but one feature that remains constant is the dark black-brown collar that can be seen even on the darkest individuals. A prominent black dart on the basal area and a pale kidney mark in the central area of the forewing are diagnostic.
Distribution: A resident species that is very common and widely distributed in Derbyshire. Population levels are higher in the lowland areas of the county.
Flight Period: May / June / July / August / September / - On the wing May – September.
Moth Activity: Nocturnal - and is attracted to light
