Martin Roome recorded the Sprawler at Smiths Gorse, Foremark, which is located in South Derbyshire, on 5th November 2025. The first record since 9th November 2021, when I was fortunate to see one that was trapped at Kings Newton by Will Soar.
Due to the late flight period, on the wing during October – November, it makes this an unmistakeable moth. The broad forewing and long black basal streak are constant features. The forewing is usually a light cold greyish-brown.
The Sprawler is a resident that is now rare in Derbyshire. A species that was once widespread in the county, but now restricted to a few sites in the Trent Valley.
