Moth of the Month (April 2025) – The Blossom Underwing

On 3rd/4th April Clive Ashton discovered a Blossom Underwing in his Cromford garden light trap. This was to be the 2nd record of this species for the recording area. The amazing thing was that I had sent out a message to the Derbyshire Moth Facebook Group a few days prior, suggesting that Blossom Underwing was a species to be looking out for amongst the Common Quakers!! What a prediction!

Then low and behold, Clive traps another Blossom Underwing on the 28th April, the 3rd county record, an unprecedented occurrence. It seems that this species was recorded from various parts of the country, indicating that an arrival of migrants may have occurred on the warm weather systems that took place during April.

A lovely moth and one that I’m sure many Derbyshire moth recorders would have liked to have found one in their moth traps.
