37.03 BF512
– Alder Case-bearer – Coleophora binderella – (Kollar, 1832)
– Uncertain/Unknown – Insufficient Data
– Leaf-miner
** Photograph and identification write up required
**
– difficult to identify – detailed examination required, often a Gen Det and/or specimen and quality photographs are required.
ID pointers: CAT 4 Gen Det required – The head and forewings are a deep, shining ochreous colour, sometimes with a coppery tinge. Adults are often difficult to identify without genitalia dissection due to similarities with other Coleophora species.
Distribution:
Uncertain – Recorded from Repton dates unknown – (DaNES) and Harrison & Sterling
The larval case was found at Blacka Moor Plantation 27/6/2015
General Comment: None
Mine Period Additional: None.
Mine ID Difficulty:
– Care required in ID process as confusion with similar leaf mines. Quality photos of the mine required.
Mine Type/s: Not Recorded
Mine Feeding Method/s: Case
Mine Comment: The female lays eggs on the underside of a leaf. The larva creates a characteristic portable case from a portion of the leaf, mining the leaf from within its case. The larval case is composite, made from large leaf fragments, and can appear untidy. The final case is about 7-8 mm long. The larvae overwinter in their cases, attached to a leaf or twig, and continue feeding in the spring before pupating within the case.

Temporal Distribution Chart
Immatures: (between 2015 - 2026)
(click legend below to show/hide datasets)
This chart summarises all available historical occurrence records collated by ISO week of the year. It reflects recorder effort and sampling distribution as well as true biological activity, and should be interpreted as an indicative pattern of seasonal occurrence rather than a statistically controlled abundance or phenology model.
Changes in First and Last Recorded Activity Dates Over Time
Activity Data Range:
2015 –
2026
Earliest Appearance:
22nd April (in 2026)
Latest Appearance:
27th June (in 2015)
This chart presents a time-series summary of recorded observations. It is based on available records at the time of analysis and will evolve as further data are added. The rolling mean provides a smoothed representation of variation in recorded activity over time. Annual record totals are shown for context; years with fewer records may provide a less complete representation of activity than years with higher recording intensity. Interpretation should consider that apparent trends may reflect both biological change and variation in recording effort.
