ID Difficulty:  amber  – care required in the identification process, as confusion with similar species is likely – quality photographs required.
Confusion Species:  Bucculatrix ulmella (Oak Tuft)
ID pointers: The adult moth is difficult to find – The forewings are brownish-whitish, speckled with dark fuscous; two pairs of oblique whitish costal and dorsal streaks before middle and at 3/4, intermediate space dark fuscous towards costa. Hind-wings are grey.The head is whitish, mixed in middle with dark fuscous.
Distribution:  (Last record: 29 August 2025 at Torside Clough )  –  Only 3 records prior to 2010 – No further reports – Leaf Mines discovered at Wyver Lane, Belper on 12/8/2025 and at Torside Clough, Glossop 29/8/2025
General Comment: Notes by Christian Heintzen on the images dated 29/8/2025 – on Birch (Betula spec.) > short gallery(<10 mm), initially contorted (A), eventually following a vein (B) completely filled with frass (C) > final larval chamber often at right angle to previous mine (D)
