ID pointers: The adults are rarely seen but are narrow-winged with a purplish-bronzy sheen, with a whitish fascia that narrows towards the costa. Adult moths are very similar to several other Stigmella species and often require GenDet examination for a definitive identification
Distribution: (Last record: 29 October 2025 at Hall lane Pond, Staveley ) – National Status – Fairly common in mainland Britain – Derbyshire status unknown, likely to be widespread where there is Birch (Betula).
General Comment: Notes by Christian Heintzen re: image dated 17/10/2025 and 25/10/2025 – on Birch (Betula) (A-C) > at first strongly contorted gallery winding around site of egg deposition (A.1-A.3), becoming subsequently straighter > frass in relatively broad central line leaving clear, distinctly scalloped margins > larva yellow with light-brown head. (image 17/10/2025) egg deposition on lower surface (C)
Mine Period Additional: Larval mines are most commonly found between August and November. Mines can often be found in “green islands” in otherwise fallen autumn leaves.

Mine Feeding Method/s: Not Recorded
Mine Comment: The larva creates a narrow and highly contorted gallery mine to begin with, often coils around where the egg was laid. The sides are typically scalloped and free of frass. Then becoming straighter and often follows a leaf vein, usually with irregular blackish frass, with the egg on the underside of the leaf. Found on Betula (Birch). The larva itself is pale yellow with a green gut-line.
