Green –  Rare / Uncommon / Scarce        purple – Leaf-miner
Taxonomy:   Micro   >>  Nepticulidae  >> Nepticulinae
Other Name/s: Nut-tree Pigmy
ID Difficulty:  Red – difficult to identify – detailed examination required, often a Gen Det and/or specimen and quality photographs are required.
ID pointers: The adult moth has purplish-bronzy forewings with a shining silvery band (fascia) across them. Adults are typically on the wing in two generations: one in May and another in August.
Distribution:  (Last record: 7 November 2025 at Long Clough, Glossop )  –  National Status – Common and widely distributed – Derbyshire status thinly spread and scarce. Most records refer to Leaf Mines.
General Comment: The species appears to be partly or wholly parthenogenetic (reproducing without males) in some regions. Notes by Christian Heintzen on image dated 7/11/2025 – on Hazel (Corylus) (A) > long narrow and often following veins, hence often angular > initially filled with narrow frass line, later becoming more scattered > egg lower surface often against vein but not in vein axil > exit slit on lower surface of leaf
Flight Period: May /  August –  May and August Mine Period:  June /  July /  October /  November
Mine Period Additional: July and October – November
Mine ID Difficulty:  Amber Mine Leaf – Care required in ID process as confusion with similar leaf mines. Quality photos of the mine required.
Mine Type/s:  Gallery
Mine Feeding Method/s: Not Recorded
Mine Comment: The larva creates a narrow and long, often angular, gallery that usually follows the veins of the leaf. Numerous mines can be located on each leaf. Frass is depositied in a narrow central line to start with becoming dispersed later. This helps to distinguish it from that of the similar Stigmella floslactella. Favours Hazel (Corylus). Several larvae may mine the same leaf.

Bedrock Geology ** indirectly affects moth distribution by influencing the type of habitat and food plants available in an area. In turn, this may affect the types of moths that can thrive, or where they can most likely be found.
