ID Difficulty:
- difficult to identify - detailed examination required, often a Gen Det and/or specimen and quality photographs are required.
Confusion Species: Cnephasia asseclana (Flax Tortrix); Cnephasia incertana (Light Grey Tortrix); Eana incanana (Bluebell Moth)
ID pointers: Although the largest, it can be confused with other Cnephasia – Has a dark ground colour and dark grey fascia. The large size alone cannot enable it to be identified. Please record as Cnephasia agg. or determine by Gen. Det.
Distribution: A widespread and common species but due to similarities with other Cnephasia species it requires a Gen Det and so this may be a reason for accurate status. One 100% record from 10th July 2022 – Hathersage – Gen Det completed.
Flight Period: July / August / - One generation July – August
Mine Period: January / February / March / April / May / September / October / November / December / - The larvae mine the leaves of a huge variety of herbaceous plants
Moth Activity: Crepuscular - active from dusk and attracted to light
