Taxonomy:   Macro  >>  Noctuidae ID Difficulty:  Red - difficult to identify - detailed examination required, often a Gen Det and/or specimen and quality photographs are required.
Confusion Species: Saltern Ear Moth, Large Ear moth
ID pointers: A medium sized broad-winged moth with pointed wing tip. Large obvious orange, sometimes white, kidney mark and smaller but equally as obvious orange oval mark. Ground colour a rich reddish-brown with orange-brown tones to the central forewing area. Ear moth is very difficult to identify from Saltern Ear and Large Ear, so is recommended to be recorded as Ear Moth agg, unless there is evidence to support the record otherwise.
Distribution:  A resident that is locally common and widely distributed in Derbyshire. Found most frequently in the lowland areas of the county, rather than on the upland areas in the north. Locally common in the southern valleys of the rivers Trent and Derwent.
