Confusion Species: Brindled Beauty; Dotted Border of form fuscata
ID pointers: Flies early in the year than Brindled Beauty. Rests with wings flat and open. Appears paler than Brindled Beauty and lacks prominent black cross-lines. The dark brindle markings vary in extent. Beware of the melanic form monacharia which can easily be confused with the melanic form of Dotted Border f.fuscata
Distribution: Throughout Derbyshire this moth is locally common and well distributed. Present in highest densities in remnants of ancient woodlands in the south of the county. Melanic forms do occur and predominate in all areas.
