Taxonomy:   Micro  >>  Gracillariidae Other Name/s: Maple Slender ID Difficulty:  amber  - care required in the identification process, as confusion with similar species is likely - quality photographs required.
Confusion Species:  Caloptilia falconipennella (Dark Alder Stilt); Caloptilia honoratella (Pale Maple Stilt)
ID pointers: Another Caloptilia that is Orangey-brown or Orangey-yellow in colour with an angled light yellow streak from the leading edge of the forewing is a good indicator.
Distribution:  (Last record: 07/02/2024 at Sandiacre )  -  Uncertain due to lack of data – 1st VC57 leaf mine 10/7/2015 ; 2nd record Findern 6/9/2023 and one record in 2024 – Very localised due to restricted areas where Field Maple exists.
Flight Period: July /  August /  September /  October /  -  Late July to October before hibernating to following spring – Restricted to areas where Field Maple is common so a localised species in the recording area Mine Period: June /  July /   - The larvae create a gallery min in the leaf at first before then creating a leaf cone followed by a leaf roll – beware of feeding signs of C.Rufipennella on Sycamore which can be confusing.
