DERBYSHIRE MACRO MOTHS VC57 – Part 1 – Hepialidae – Erebidae

In August 2023, I completed a list of the Macro Moths that have been recorded in Derbyshire. Based upon current available data at the time, and along with help from DANES, (Derbyshire and Notts Entomological Society), and other local county moth recorders, the list has finally been agreed upon. To my knowledge, no other Derbyshire Macro Moth list is currently in existence, and more importantly, up to date, so this is a major step forward for the Derbyshire moth recorders to use as a source of reference. The list will be updated as necessary.

As at 23rd October 2024, there are 575 species that have been recorded in VC57, and the checklist is now published here. Derbyshire Macro Moths Checklist

The Macro Moth photo galleries on this website are in two parts:-

PART 1 – 341 Species listed from HEPIALIDAE to EREBIDAE (290 species photographed)

PART 2 – 235 Species listed from NOCTUIDAE to NOLIDAE (213 species photographed)

TOTAL 576 for Derbyshire (Total photographed 503 species to November 2024)

Latest photos added – Tawny Shears / Small White Wave / Cream Wave / Large Ranunculus / Tawny Marbled Minor /Gypsy Moth / The Mallow / Poplar Kitten / White-line Dart / Pale Oak Beauty

Recent new species for Derbyshire –  Blair’s Mocha / Gypsy Moth August 2024 / Brindled White Spot May 2024 / Dotted Chestnut  April 2024 (not for VC57) / Blossom Underwing April 2021 / Square Spot May 2016 / Bilberry Pug July 2023 / Great Prominent – May 2023 / Dark Crimson Underwing- August 2023 / Rannoch Looper – June 2023 / Light Brocade – May 2023.

There are 29 species on the checklist that are now thought to be extinct in the VC57 and in Derbyshire.

Guide to list – The first number is the “new” decimal-style checklist number, corresponding to “A checklist of the Lepidoptera of the British Isles” by Agassiz, D.J.L., Beavan, S.D. & Heckford R.J. 2013, from now on referred to as the “2013 checklist”. The next sequence of numbers refer to the Bradley & Fletcher Checklist  – CLICK on the species to take you to the Species Page, with Status in the County, ID Guide.and photographs.
