Nepticulidae – Nepticulinae – Stigmella assimilella – Aspen Pigmy

Status – National Status – Local – Derbyshire status unknown, but locally common where there are poplars and Aspen.

ID  PointersA Leaf-miner – The egg is usually found on the upper-side of the leaf besides a rib. The gallery is clear with broken linear frass and is a densely winding corridor. Found on Populus tremula (Aspen), Populus alba (White Poplar) and Populus canescens (Grey Poplar). Mine shown on Populus tremula (Aspen).

The adult is a tiny moth with blackish sooty-grey ground colour with several creamy white spots and creamy white cilia. An orange tufted head.

Mine – August-October – Flight time for adults not known
