The Campion – Noctuidae – Hadeninae – Hadena rivularis – colour code •
STATUS – A resident that is wide spread but not common in Derbyshire. Present in small numbers across all areas but usually higher numbers in the south and east of the county.
ID POINTERS – When the moth is fresh there is a diagnostic purplish-pink marbling to the forewing. The oval and kidney mark are prominently outlined in white linking together and forming a characteristic semi-circular shape. This feature is a good indicator for separating from similar Lychnis. The purple colouration fades quickly with age. The outer cross line is white and zig-zagged throughout, turning to finish near the leading edge. On similar Lychnis the line is different.
FLIGHT PERIOD – On the wing May – August
